12 April, a day I would never forget, the day of my high jump competition.

The day started when I woke up early in the morning, feeling tired and nervous for the competition. Lazily, I walked to the toilet to brush my teeth and get changed. That day, my sister had to take the bus to school by herself and she was groaning a lot. “Why do I have to take the bus? Why can’t you send me?” However, her desperate appeal failed.

The journey to Choa Chu Kang stadium was scary. My mind was swimming with thoughts of the competition. What if I couldn’t do well? What if my injuries act up?

Before I knew it, I arrived at the stadium and Estella was already there. Then, we walked to the entrance to wait for Valerie. Not long after, she arrived.
We started doing warm-ups and drills and then went to the high jump pit to do a few jumps. By that time, I was very scared because many of my competitors could jump very well! Imagine what was going through my mind at that moment!

Soon, the competition started and I was the first person jumping! I was very nervous. However, my seniors told me that it was good thing as if I was one of the last few, I would be scared when the others in front of me had done very well, thus dampening my mood.

Valerie told me, “Hey, you know those two Dunman High girls? They did not take their markings! They were like ‘Must take? Oh no, I’m going to die!’” I stood there wondering, if they didn’t take their run up, how are they even going to jump?

To my dismay, I did not clear my first attempt of 130cm. Luckily, my I managed to clear it at the second attempt. Siew Lei, my friend from another school didn’t manage to clear the height at all that she started crying. I wanted to comfort her so much, but I was scared that my coach would scold me.

After 130cm, I could not clear the remaining heights. Lim Ping from Nanyang Girls’ managed to clear 150cm and was therefore crowned 1st place. During her last few jumps, all of us cheered for her, hoping that she would be able to break the record, but however she couldn’t. There’s a saying, ‘Enemies on the field, Friends off the field’. I think that this is very true as no matter we lose or not, we should display good sportsmanship and encourage one another.

Estella managed to clinch the 3rd position and she was overjoyed! We were all happy for her too.

Although I only managed to get the 8th position, I feel that I have tried my best and will push harder next year. This is my first high jump competition and I hope that it won’t be my last. If I am able to represent the school again, I will cherish the chance and strive to do better.
